Movember

November 11, 2010

As many of you already know, a mustache isn’t something that comes and goes with the whimsical nature of your shaving habits.  A mustache is its own being, its own entity.  Alive.  Breathing.  Thinking.  Doing.  It can flare up uninvited at any point.  Its presence can manifest itself in such noble forms such as the Eagle, the Spring Salman or the Spirt Bear and even the mighty Kangaroo and Panda in Australia and Asia respectively.  It’s like herpes.  Once you grow one for the first time you quickly realize that the blade is no match.  Similar to an arrow with no feather or point in your quiver.  You can not control its presence or its return.  You can not plot its evolution.  You can only hope to control it.

The leaves are falling, the air is getting brisker and the months have done their annual dance from winter to spring to summer and now fall.  As the month of November is upon us, like bears gearing up for hibernation a man must dawn his armor.  In ancient times this was done by growing a mustache to protect said man from the harsh elements that mother nature was preparing to throw at him over the coming months.  And of course to mate with many females.  But as time has progressed, so has man.  Innovations like fire, The Duchess Tavern, and the Snuggie have allowed man to shift his natural protection instincts away from himself and onto others around him.  Behold Movember.  A glorious time to challenge men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a mustache. The moustache is our ribbon, the means by which we raise awareness and funds for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our commitment is to grow a moustache for 30 days. Funds raised benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG.  It is an issue affecting so many, and so often the best cure is early diagnosis.  It’s out there and simply having a sweet stache will not save you completely.  But hopefully a sweet stache will motivate you to learn more about it to protect yourself and raise money for those who are fighting cancer.  I’m sending you this link not because I expect you to donate but rather to get you thinking about Prostate cancer.  I’m sure many of you are wondering if you are more of a man than me.  And without a proper duel with swords or an old fashioned showdown we may never have an answer.  But, for the month of Movember if you do not have a mustache on your face, I can assure you, you are not.
